I do a fair bit of consulting / training and in order to cut down the installation and updating time, I’ve slipstreamed SP2 and the Cumulative Updates into my RTM bits. Because there’s no sense getting started with the configuration until the infrastructure is rock solid. So I have decided to post my Graphical Step-by-Step procedure. Here it is:

In this procedure I will be using Project Server 2007 RTM bits, but you can substitute for MOSS 2007 RTM bits. Either one will work. Also the folder names I use can be changed to whatever suites your needs. Just make sure that you can tell the x86 and x64 bits apart

Step 1 – Download Service Packs and Cumulative Updates

1. Download Service Pack 2 (for both x86 and x64) for WSS 3.0 and SharePoint Server 2007 into a folder called SP2. Here are the links to get the downloads:

Service Pack 2 for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, x86 & x64
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=79BADA82-C13F-44C1-BDC1-D0447337051B&displaylang=en

Service Pack 2 for Office SharePoint Server 2007, x86 & x64
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B7816D90-5FC6-4347-89B0-A80DEB27A082&displaylang=en

2. Request the latest Cumulative Updates for WSS and MOSS

June Cumulative Update for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, x86 & x64

June Cumulative Update for Office SharePoint Server 2007, x86 & x64
http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=971537

NOTE: Click Show hotfixes for all platforms and languages (2) link to display both platforms

Step 2

Select both files and complete Section 2 and use a REAL email address as you will be receiving an email from Microsoft Support with the download link and password for the files that you will be extracting to use later.

Step 3

3. Open your emails from hotfix@microsoft.com and click on the links provided to download the Cumulative Update files. Do not delete the emails as it contains the passwords you will need in order to extract the files.

Step 4

4. Save the downloaded files into a folder called June_CU

Step 5

5. Double click on the 386539_intl_x64_zip.exe file and the Microsoft Self-Extractor dialog box appears and click Continue.

Step 6

6. In the location box, type S:\June_CU and click OK.
Click Yes to create the folder.

Step 7

7. Type the corresponding password that was included in your email.

Step 8

8. Repeat Steps 5-7 for the remaining files.

Step 2 – Copy Project Server 2007 RTM Files

9. Load your Project Server 2007 CD into the DVD drive and copy the contents of the CD into a folder called PS2007_RTM

Step 1

Step 3 – Extract and Copy Service Pack 2 Files to Updates Folder

10. Open a Command Prompt window and type the following commands:

S:\SP2\wssv3sp2-kb953338-x86-fullfile-en-us.exe /extract:S:\SP2\WSS_SP2_x86 S:\SP2\wssv3sp2-kb953338-x64-fullfile-en-us.exe /extract:S:\SP2\WSS_SP2_x64 S:\SP2\officeserver2007sp2-kb953334-x86-fullfile-en-us.exe /extract:S:\SP2\MOSS_SP2_x86 S:\SP2\officeserver2007sp2-kb953334-x64-fullfile-en-us.exe /extract:S:\SP2\MOSS_SP2_x64

Accept the License Agreement and click Continue

Step 10

11. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to extracted folder (S:\WSS_SP2_x86) and copy  the contents to the Updates folder (S:\PS2007_RTM\x86\Updates). Repeat the procedure for each of the following extracted SP2 folders to the corresponding Updates folders.

Extracted SP2 Folder Updates Folder

x86 Files
S:\WSS_SP2_x86 S:\PS2007_RTM\x86\Updates
S:\MOSS_SP2_x86 S:\PS2007_RTM\x86\Updates

x64 Files
S:\WSS_SP2_x64 S:\PS2007_RTM\x64\Updates
S:\MOSS_SP2_x64 S:\PS2007_RTM\x64\Updates

IMPORTANT: It is very important to copy the correct platform files to to correct Updates folder

12.  In Windows Explorer, navigate to S:\PS2007_RTM\x86\Updates and delete the wsssetup.dll file. Repeat in the x64\Updates folder.

NOTE: The wsssetup.dll file from WSS SP2 may cause a conflict with the svrsetup.dll file from Office Server SP2. Having both files in the Updates folder is not supported by Microsoft.

Step 4 – Extract and Copy the Cumulative Updates Files to Updates Folder

13. Open a Command Prompt window and type the following commands:

S:\June_CU\wss-kb971538-fullfile-x86-glb.exe /extract:S:\June_CU\WSS_CU_x86 S:\June_CU\wss-kb971538-fullfile-x64-glb.exe /extract:S:\June_CU\WSS_CU_x64 S:\June_CU\office-kb971537-fullfile-x86-glb.exe /extract:S:\June_CU\MOSS_CU_x86 S:\June_CU\office-kb971537-fullfile-x64-glb.exe /extract:S:\June_CU\MOSS_CU_x64

Accept the License Agreement and click Continue.

Step 11

14. In Windows Explorer, navigate to extracted folder (S:\June_CU\WSS_CU_x86) and copy  the contents to the Updates folder (S:\PS2007_RTM\x86\Updates). Repeat the procedure for each of the following extracted SP2 folders to the corresponding Updates folders.

Extracted SP2 Folder Updates Folder

x86 Files
S:\June_CU\WSS_CU_x86 S:\PS2007_RTM\x86\Updates
S:\June_CU\MOSS_CU_x86 S:\PS2007_RTM\x86\Updates

x64 Files
S:\June_CU\WSS_CU_x64 S:\PS2007_RTM\x64\Updates
S:\June_CU\MOSS_CU_x64 S:\PS2007_RTM\x64\Updates

IMPORTANT: It is very important to copy the correct platform files to to correct Updates folder

15. Rename PS2007_RTM folder to PS2007_SP2_CU

16. Burn the contents of the PS2007_SP2_CU folder to a DVD disc or create an ISO image using your favorite tool. (Personally I use ImgBurn (http://www.imgburn.com) as it’s a nice little tool. (Thanks for tip Gordo!)

Step 5 – Test by Installing Project Server

This step assumes that you have installed or have access to the necessary pre-installation software (such as IIS, SQL Server, etc.) and components (ASP.NET 2.0, etc)

17. Insert your newly created PS2007_SP2_CU DVD disc into the CD/DVD-ROM drive.

18. Depending on how you burned your DVD disc should autorun setup.exe

19. Install using Complete (as a Single Server Farm)

20. Almost at the end of the Installation Progress you should see the following:

Step 12

It will take a few minutes to install Service Pack 2 and the June Cumulative Updates for WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007.

21. After the installation is complete, go to the Control Panel and open Add or Remove Programs.

22. At the top of the window, select Show updates check box and scroll down to Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 where you should see the following:

Step 13

If you check the KB article numbers listed you will find that they match the June Cumulative Updates.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971538

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971537

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971620

You should also note that if you select an update and click the link for Support Information, you will notice that you cannot uninstall the update. It’s because we included it as the initial installation. If the update was done afterwards, then the uninstall option would be available.

So if you see this list, then you have properly slipstreamed Project Server 2007 DVD disc to include SP2 and Cumulative Updates
